Abstract

It has long been recognized that nitrogen (N) plays an important role in soil fertility. Even in well-fertilized fields about 50%, and in some cases more than 70%, of the N absorbed by cereal crops is derived from the soil N pool (Zhu 1988). Obviously, knowledge of the forms, distribution and amount of N in soil is essential for understanding the N supply characteristics of a soil and for the efficient management of fertilizer N. In this chapter, a brief account of the forms, distribution and amounts of N in the soils of China is presented.
