Abstract
The Lepse is a service vessel in the fleet operated by the Murmansk Shipping Company which is currently used to store spent nuclear fuel from icebreakers. Construction of the ship began in 1934 but was not completed, and the ship was sunk in 1941. It was salvaged after the war and modified for nuclear service purposes, and then brought into use in 1962. In 1967, fuel elements from the Lenin, which had been damaged during a loss-of-coolant accident, were transferred to the Lepse. These elements had swollen and become distorted during the accident, and it proved necessary to use some force to insert them into the storage channels provided on the ship.
