Abstract
Although 1980 is considered to be the year in which the issue of soil contamination arose in the Netherlands, efforts to improve soil quality and soil remediation techniques were begun long before then. In fact, the Dutch have been concerned with improving and managing the quality of their soil for several centuries. A large part of the Netherlands is man-made, with ca. 25% of the land surface below sea level, and if there were no dikes over 50% would be regularly flooded.
