Abstract
Both boron (B) toxicity and deficiency have been recorded on soils in the state of Tamil Nadu. In this study, we investigated the B sorption behaviour of 11 agricultural soils of Tamil Nadu as influenced by solution concentration, reaction time and removal of organic matter and CaCO3. Adsorption of B was almost complete after 24 h in all the soils. Boron adsorption in these soils was best described by parabolic diffusion and Elovichian kinetics. Though adsorption of B conformed to both the Langmuir and the Freundlich adsorption isotherms, all the data fitted well with the Freundlich adsorption isotherm. The B adsorbability (K values) as measured by the Freundlich adsorption isotherm varied from 0.18 to 1.96 mg B kg-1. The K values of Freundlich adsorption isotherm of soils after removal of organic matter as well as CaCO3 were lower than those of untreated soils. The strongly significant relationships between clay, organic matter and CEC and the Freundlich parameter K indicates that these soil properties control B adsorption in the soils.
