Part of the book series: Solid Mechanics and its Applications ((SMIA,volume 53))

Abstract

A model based on the affine motion of spherical particles of uniform size is developed for the early stage of compaction. Newly available results for the interaction of two viscoplastic spheres are used along with elements from previous models to develop a definitive statement of the results for arbitrary deformations. A prescription is given for computing the macroscopic stress in general, and pressure versus density relations are presented for both isostatic and closed die compaction.
