Open-Loop Control of Polymerization Reactors

  • Chapter

Part of the book series: NATO ASI Series ((NSSE,volume 335))

Abstract

The end-use properties of polymeric materials are determined by the characteristics of the macromolecules such as length, composition, sequence of monomer units, end groups, and so on. Moreover, due to the statistical nature of the population of macromolecules, these properties are not necessarily the same for all individuals but rather they change following specific distributions. As a consequence, in order to determine the end-use properties of a polymer one has to control the molecular weight distribution, the chain composition distribution, the monomer sequence distribution and so on.
