Abstract

The Caspian Sea is the largest inland water body on Earth. Having had only the Soviet Union and Iran as riparian states, it is now surrounded by five riparians states: The Russian Federation, Azerbaijan, Kazakstan, Turkmenistan, and the Islamic Republic of Iran, since the dissolution of the former Soviet Union in 1991. Its huge catchment includes upstream areas of rivers flowing into the Caspian from Armenia, Turkey, and Georgia.
