Abstract

From the phyllosphere of soybeans (Glycine max) saprophytic bacteria were isolated and screened for their antagonistic activity against Pseudomonas syringae pv. glycinea (Psg) using an in vitro and in planta assay. Eighty-two isolates were tested. Twenty-six strains inhibited the growth of Psg in vitro. Eighteen isolates prevent the development of bacterial blight symptoms in planta. Only 7 of the 82 isolates tested were antagonistically active in vitro as weil as in planta. One of them, the strain P. syringae 22d/93 was selected as a promising candidate in biological control studies against Psg.
