Nitrogen dynamics on a soil with different tillage systems

Abstract

The main objective of this work was to study the effects of conventional tillage and conservation tillage on the evolution and profile distribution of N. The study was carried out on a silty loam Fluvisol, under irrigated maize (FAO 700), on experimental fields of Escola Superior Agraria de Coimbra (Baixo Mondego).

Soil samples were collected before sowing (March 1991 and 1994) and after harvesting (October 1991 and 1993).

Soil analysis for total and mineral nitrogen and organic matter, were made. During the growing season, the influence of tillage on soil nitrogen seems to be important in the data of October 1991 : the nitrate levels were higher in the conventional tillage system and the organic matter content was higher in the conservation tillage.

The nitrate evolution and distribution in the soil profile were similar in both tillage systems.

During the fallow period (October 1993 to March 1994) the nitrate levels do not seem to be different in both tillage systems. Some discussion is made about the precipitation and temperature data and their influence on the rate of mineralization.
