Abstract

It is now more than 70 years since rheumatoid factors (RFs) were discovered and nearly 50 years since they were first associated with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) [1, 2]. During that time, a vast amount of work has been done on the incidence, nature and specificity of RF in many laboratories. These studies established that RFs react with determinants expressed on the Fc of IgG from human and other primates [3]. Thus the term RF is generally used to describe autoantibodies to IgG Fc. The term antiglobulins (which has been used as a synonym for RF in some studies) refers to any antibody reactive with determinants other than those on the Fc of IgG, or on immunoglobulin isotypes, such as IgE and IgA [4, 5]. Some RFs are also known to cross-react with other non-IgG related antigenic determinants [6].
