Abstract

The neem tree or Indian lilac, Azadirachta indica, a member of the family Meliaceae and a botanical relative of mahogany, is known in Sanskrit as arishta (reliever of sickness) and in Kiswahili as marubaini, meaning 40 cures. It is a tree held in high esteem in India, a country which boasts at least 18 million neem trees, and in many other tropical countries — not only because of its conspicuous medicinal potential, but, especially in the last few decades, because of the excellent and astonishing pest control properties of its easily accessible products. Apart from the latter, it is a source of fuel, firewood, timber, folkloristic herbal medicines and natural contraceptives.
