Abstract
Noise is a form of airborne vibration, usually containing a mixture of low and high frequencies. The fundamental measurement of sound is its pressure, using the basic unit of the decibel (dB). The scale is logarithmic. An increase of 3 dB represents a doubling of the sound energy anywhere on the scale. Percieved loudness, as opposed to actual sound pressure, doubles with an increase of approximately 10 dB. The dB(A) scale represents a type of weighting of sounds of various frequencies, which is suitable for most normal sounds (Beate Collins et al, 1993).
