What is Mathematics Education? A Survey of Mathematics Educators in Canada

  • Chapter
Mathematics Education as a Research Domain: A Search for Identity

Part of the book series: New ICMI Studies Series ((NISS,volume 4))

Abstract

This chapter is about some results from a survey of mathematics educators in Canadian universities that was conducted in 1993. The aim of the survey was to collect information about their social backgrounds, education, careers and views about mathematics and mathematics education, in order to gain a sense of the identity of this professional community. The results presented here are mainly those concerning the views about mathematics education. The remaining results are discussed in Mura (1995а, 1995b).
