Abstract
Thirteen years ago, it was shown that nitrogen fixation occurred in the methanogenic Archaea (Beley et al., 1984; Murray, Zinder, 1984). Since then, the fundamental mechanism of nitrogen fixation in the Archaea has proven similar to that in the bacteria (Lobo, Zinder, 1992). In addition, nifH, D, and K homologues have been cloned from methanogens, and two glnB-like genes have been found between nifH and nifD (Souillard, Sibold, 1989).
