Abstract
The behaviors of optical soliton propagation in standard single mode fiber (SMF) system with strongly dispersion compensated scheme using a dispersion compensating fiber (DCF) were studied by both the numerical simulation and the recirculating loop transmission experiment. The simulation revealed that the alternating average dispersion map arrangement changing between the normal and anomalous values and the use of an in-line optical bandpass filter (BPF) help stabilize the soliton pulse and extend the transmission distance over dispersion compensated standard single mode fiber (SMF). As predicted by the simulation, soliton transmissions at 10 Gbit/s over 6,100 km long SMF and 20 Gbit/s over 2,600 km long SMF were successfully demonstrated by employing the novel dispersion arrangement and suitable in-line optical BPFs.
