Nonlinear Chirped RZ and NRZ Pulses in Optical Transmission Lines

Research on Optical Soliton Communications at Osaka University

Abstract

In this paper, we summarize some of the recent results obtained by the soliton group at Osaka University. The main objective is to study nonlinear pulse propagation in an optical transmission system with dispersion management. This paper consists of two parts dealing with the properties of soliton-like RZ (return-to-zero) and conventional NRZ (non-return-to-zero) pulses. The main difference in the systems using those pulses is the sign of the group velocity dispersion. However recent studies show that both systems require similar dispersion managements for improving system performance.
