Abstract

The origin of infrared absorbing dyes for information recording system was based on the development of the gallium-arsenic semiconductor laser (diode laser) that emits laser light at 780-840 nm. Diode laser is a very small, cheap and a convenient light source for electronics and photonics devices. It can be said that new laser technology has developed a new dye chemistry. I reviewed these new fields of dye chemistry in 1990 as “Infrared Absorbing Dyes” [1] published from Plenum Press. In 1992, full survey of “Near-Infrared Absorbing Dyes” was also published in Chemical Reviews [2], which visualized the correlation between the absorption properties and chemical structures of NIR dyes.
