Abstract

Dramatic advancement in magnetic recording has been recently made answering to rapidly increasing demand for storage capacity in information tools of video cassette, computer hard disk, and flexible disk systems. Developments of materials for recording media and devices are the key issues to establish a new era of information society. Recent progresses in the storage systems are reviewed, and then, the future requirements for the related magnetic materials are discussed from the basic view point of the recording media. In a hard disk drive, the bit area becomes very smaller, and is going to less than 0.1 μm2 in 2001. For forming such small recorded bits, magnetic recording media are required to have a high coercivity more than 3000 Oe with a very thin thickness less than 10 nm. Many crucial issues are arising in the media development. In order to solve the problems, design concepts of longitudinal media are discussed, basing on micromagnetics. For head core materials, a high magnetic moment is essential for writing information on a high coercivity thin film medium On the other hand, a perpendicular recording scheme is also described as for a further high density storage system. The requirements on perpendicular media are also discussed in terms of the fabrication parameters. It is concluded that further studies on the magnetic materials from the wide aspect view from fundamentals to application are very necessary for future multimedia tools.
