Abstract

Previous studies of denominai verbs (e.g. Marchand 1964, Clark & Clark 1979, Wunderlich 1987) have shown that they do not have arbitrary meanings, unless they are highly lexicalized, but pattern systematically. Clark & Clark mention the following patterns of denominal verbs in English:

  1. a.

locatum verbs: blanket the bed, roof the house, jam the scones, spice the food...

  2. b.

location verbs: ground the planes, bench the players, headquarter the troops...

  3. c.

instrument verbs: to bike, mop the floor, trumpet the music, to cable...

  4. d.

goal verbs: fool the man, orphan the children, sucker the public, pile the money...

  5. e.

agent verbs: butcher the cow, police the park, pilot the ship, to soldier...

  6. f.

duration verbs: summer in France, winter in California, weekend at the cabin...

  7. g.

experiencer verbs: witness the accident, boycott the store, badger the officials

  8. h.

source verbs: piece the quilt together, word the sentence, letter the sign
