Artificial liver support

Liver Growth and Repair

Abstract

Acute liver failure is a clinical syndrome resulting from severe hepatocellular injury (dysfunction) or necrosis. It may develop in the absence of preceding liver disease (fulminant hepatic failure, FHF) or as an acute exacerbation of a chronic underlying process. The majority of patients in the first group will rapidly deteriorate and die unless they urgently undergo liver transplantation; only a small percentage of these patients will recover and subsequently have normal liver function. The second group of patients will often respond to treatment of the precipitating cause of the acute exacerbation; if therapy is not effective or the extent of liver destruction irreparable, they will succumb due to sepsis, hemorrhage and the development of multiple organ failure.
