Abstract
With their extreme exposure to light and extreme temperature fluctuations, rock surfaces would not appear to be a benign environment for algae (or any other organisms). One strategy used by some organisms to overcome these environmental constraints is to become endolithic, i.e., to survive within the rock matrix. Recent studies have shown that bedrock and any deep earth habitats that are sufficiently cool (upper limits of about 150°C have been suggested) are likely the home of extensive bacterial1 populations (Gold 1992, Ghiorse 1997, see Gould 1996 for popular review).
