Summary

This chapter is focused on the electrochemical properties of the thylakoid membrane and illustrates their dependence on energization. Topics include primary reactions, charge separation, charge recombination, secondary electron flow, protonmotive force, charge dissipation and membrane conductance. The experimental approaches to study these properties include electrochromic bandshift at 515 nm (P515), absorbance changes at 820 nm (P700), chlorophyll fluorescence quenching analysis, microelectrode implement and loose patch-clamp of isolated single chloroplasts. An electrical equivalence scheme of the chloroplast impedance network is presented to facilitate the interpretation of the experimental results.
