Abstract

An important step in the characterisation of cosmic analogues is represented by the study and comparison of morphological, chemical and spectroscopical properties of “crystalline” and “amorphous” materials. In order to achieve this aim we have determined the mass extinction coefficient in the infrared region, between 2.5 and 200 µm, of Fayalite (Fe2SiO4) in the two forms. Amorphous materials were obtained by laser vaporisation of a crystalline target. We have studied the morphology of the grains, computed their dimensional distribution and average diameter and analysed the elemental composition, using a field emission Scanning Electron Microscope equipped with an Energy Dispersive X-ray detection system.
