Abstract

The origin of our planetary system and the hypothetical existence of other worlds has always attracted the attention of mankind. But only in the evolution of 20th century’s exact science it was proven that the Sun and the Solar System have formed simultaneously and from the same reservoir of material. In addition, astronomers started to collect vast information on star-forming regions which are useful ingredients for a modern theory on the origin of planetary systems. The first detections of extra-solar planets (Mayor and Queloz, 1995) have further stimulated the interest in this subject and each new detection will give a theory of planetary origin a more general character but will also, on the other hand, constrain theoretical models to predictions beyond the characteristics of our Solar System.
