Abstract
Amongst the different major accidents which can happen in process plants and in the transportation of hazardous materials, fire is the one which has its effects and consequences restricted to the shortest distances (except for smoke dispersion). Thermal radiation from all types of fire is limited usually to distances much shorter than the effects of explosion or toxic releases. Nevertheless, fire can lead to important major accidents: its thermal effects on containers, storage tanks or process equipment can originate further loss of containment of toxic or flammable substances, thus enlarging the scale of the accidental scenario.
