Abstract
Since Spring 1996 the sharing of database resources by means of the University Computer Network has been successfully experimented at the University of Padua using Silver Platter Electronic Reference Library (ERL) technology. Prior to this, several databases such as MEDLINE and Current Contents had already been set up in the scientific libraries of our university (9 copies of MEDLINE, 5 copies of Current Contents) and these were available on a CD support running many different software programs. However, this resulted in bad resources allocation, not always justified by the number of searches, together with correspondingly high costs. Moreover, training proved difficult because of the heterogeneous and uncoordinated software packages used by various libraries.
