Abstract
According to the 1991 census, the total population of India (including the projected population of Jammu and Kashmir, where the census could not be held) is 845.30 million. In order to calculate literacy rates, only those aged seven years and over were taken into account, yielding a total of 359.28 million literates, i.e. approximately 52 per cent of the total population in that age group. The literacy rate among females was 39.29 per cent, as against the male literacy rate of 64.13 per cent; again, the rural literacy rate was 44.69 per cent, as against the urban literacy rate of 73.08 per cent. The drop-out rate from class I to V in primary school was estimated at approximately 50 per cent. (For all the above details, see National Institute of Adult Education, 1993).
