Language Awareness and Knowledge About Language: An Overview

Abstract

‘Language Awareness’ (henceforth: LA) has become a buzzword in language education. This does not mean that everybody in the profession knows what it means, let alone that one knows what its origins and implications are. For this reason a number of educational linguists from all over Europe got together in London in late 1991 to try and establish what the term stands for. At this mini round-table (I was one of those present) broad agreement was reached on the following working definition of LA:’ …a person’s sensitivity to and conscious awareness of the nature of language and its role in human life’ (James & Garrett, 1992, p. 8). I shall use this definition as a point of reference throughout this chapter. LA and ‘Knowledge about Language’ (henceforth: KAL) will be used interchangeably unless stated otherwise.
