Abstract

Frequencies of oscillation have two major advantages as diagnostics of stellar properties: they can be measured with great precision; and they are simply related to the properties of the star. A crude measure of the characteristic pulsation periods of a star is provided by the dynamical time scale tdyn = [R3/(GM)]1/2 where R and M are the stellar radius and mass, and G is the gravitational constant (for the Sun tdyn ≃ 26 min). Thus the frequency of a single (identified) mode of oscillation essentially provides a measure of the mean density pM/R3 of the star. To obtain further information, more modes are required. In many pulsating stars, the spectrum of oscillation is in fact very rich.
