Abstract

The ferromagnetic manganese perovskites L1-xAxMnO3 (L is a trivalent lanthanide and A a divalent alkaline-earth) display remarkable changes of resistivity across the metal-insulator transition occurring at the Curie temperature (T c ). This sensitivity of the electronic transport properties to the magnetic order translates to an extreme magnetoresistance under an external applied magnetic field. Quite naturally, the field dependence of the magnetoresistance is thus maximum at T c and for some compositions, the magnetoresistivity (ρ(0) - ρ (H))/ ρ(H= 0) at fields H in the 50 kOe range, reaches values as “colossal” as 106% [1]
