Part of the book series: Developments in Plant Breeding ((DIPB,volume 8))

Abstract

Reciprocal crosses between Lolium multiflorum plants and between L. multiflorum and L. perenne plants, which were either resistant or susceptible to crown rust were performed and the mode of inheritance of the resistance was analysed. In the crosses in which the resistant plants Axis-1 or Axis-2 were involved, a maternal type of inheritance was observed. Further confirmation was obtained from a cross between a resistant second generation descendant of Axis-2 and a moderately susceptible L. perenne plant. In one of the crosses between one resistant and one susceptible L. multiflorum plant, a nuclear type of inheritance was observed. Depending on the definition of resistance, the action of a dominant resistance gene or the presence of a polygenic trait could be concluded. Based on the results obtained, it is suggested to combine BSA and QTL analysis to identify markers linked with crown rust resistance in ryegrass.
