Abstract

In the early part of the twentieth century, just prior to the First World (or Great) War, it was discovered that carbon black could be added to rubber in quite considerable quantities as a ‘filler’ and that it was unique in the way in which it reinforced or improved the properties of the final product rather than just cheapening it by extending its bulk to the detriment of its physical performance.
