Abstract
Many of the issues of great interest to theoreticians in language and language acquisition are also of great interest to classroom professionals. Yet there is insufficient communication between these two groups, valuable though that always is for both groups. And the literature in each area is dense with terminology that prevents easy access to the facts of interest and to the claims espoused. In this introduction I propose to delineate three issues of great importance in both areas and to do so in language plain enough so that the reader may find it interesting and intriguing enough to attempt to dip into the literature of another field, in spite of its attendant difficulties.
