Abstract
The Grain Pool of Western Australia (WA) has been marketing lupins internationally for over 25 years, making its first export sale in 1972 with a 1,000 metric tonne (MT) cargo to Europe. This sale followed the establishment of the first voluntary lupin pool in Western Australia that same year, receiving 1,666 MT of lupins. From these humble beginnings, lupin exports by the Grain Pool have grown to an estimated 835,000 MT in 1996–97, generating AUD$190 million in export revenue. It is therefore fitting that the Grain Pool should be asked to address the topic of the potential and challenges in the marketing of lupins for food and feed.
