Abstract
The criteria used in selecting astronomical papers for press conferences and press releases are reviewed in the context of what the news media expect and require. The press activities developed over the past 15 years for the semiannual national meetings of the American Astronomical Society, including press conferences, media seminars, and photo opportunities, which are planned on the basis of these criteria, are briefly described. Guidelines used in helping scientists to write press releases and to prepare for press confererences are also summarized.
