Combustion of Chlorinated Hydrocarbons

  • Chapter
Pollutants from Combustion

Part of the book series: NATO Science Series ((ASIC,volume 547))

Abstract

Combustion of chlorinated hydrocarbons (CHC) is of practical interest as controlled incineration represents an effective treatment option for the management of toxic and hazardous wastes (1, 2). Considerable knowledge now exists on the oxidation and pyrolysis of chlorinated hydrocarbons as a result of extensive research done over the past several decades. It is impossible to cover the contributions of numerous researches to this endeavor. Consequently, select contributions will be presented in this set of notes. Previous CHC combustion research can also be categorized into two groups: 1. Experimental and modeling studies using pilot and full scale facilities aimed towards the development of better operational guidelines for practical incinerators (see for example 2, 3, 4, 5 and the special issue of Environ. Eng. Sci. vol.15, No.2, 1998). Experimental and computational studies aimed towards the development of a better understanding of the underlying chemical and physical events associated with CHC combustion (see for example 6 to 15). The latter will be the focus of this set of notes.
