Abstract
The aim of obtaining improved cruise and manoeuvre performance of both military combat and civil transport aircraft can only be achieved by a thorough understanding of the flows over their lifting surfaces. At manoeuvre conditions, separation of the flow from these surfaces can occur that can result in an increase in unsteady forces (buffet), higher drag and a loss of control. There is, therefore, a need to be able to control these separations in a way that does not adversely effect the aircraft performance in other parts of the flight envelope.
