Abstract

Production and dismantling of nuclear weapons inevitably generate radioactive waste that can be divided into two groups: bulk contaminated and surface contaminated. Electro-chemical treatment offers convenient and economical ways to separate radioactive and non-radioactive components of waste. This paper discusses applications of electro-chemical treatment methods for destruction of hazardous components and metal decontamination. In numerous cases these methods allow for recovery and re-use of non-radioactive components.
