Abstract
The appendix is an embryonic remnant of the bursa of Fabricius. It shows great individual variation in location and size. It generally arises at the base of the caecum at the confluence of the taenia. The tip may be located in the pelvis or high in the right upper quadrant behind the colon. Its origin is behind the colon; thus by definition, the appendix is always retrocaecal; however the tip is located behind the colon in only 65% of cases.
