Abstract
The chloroplast metabolism includes redox reactions which liberate free radicals (FR) and reactive oxygen species (ROS). Consequentially, photoautotrophic organisms have evolved a network of protection mechanisms. It is comprised of a set of enzymic and non-enzymic antioxidants. Despite that protection, FR and ROS can escape from inactivation and react with metabolites and macromolecules, for instance with lipids. Lipid radicals and peroxides in turn may cause membrane damage and loss of membrane functions.
