Policy Research: A Withering Branch oF Economics?

  • Chapter
Policy Analysis and Economics

Part of the book series: Recent Economic Thought Series ((RETH,volume 23))

Abstract

What are the prospects that policy research will remain an important preoccupation of economists and that new economics Ph.D.s will continue to be trained for, interested in, and rewarded for doing policy research? This question is timely as policy schools and economics departments reexamine their respective missions and clarify their goals and objectives. Debate within public policy and public administration schools continues over the relative emphasis they should place on policy research and analysis versus public administration or management (Wildavsky, 1985; Kettle, 1990)
