Abstract

Although endometriosis was initially described in the mid nineteenth century1, little interest in this pathological process was apparent until the early twentieth century when Sampson presented his classic theory on menstrual reflux as the aetiology of peritoneal endometriosis2. Since that time, endometriosis has proved to be both one of the most fascinating, yet most frustrating, pathological conditions of the female reproductive tract. Clinicians and researchers alike have shared in an intense interest in the aetiology and the most effective management of women with endometriosis of the true pelvis or of extrapelvic sites.
