Abstract

Wear particles of bone cement vere retrieved by enzyme digestion of membranes from failed prosthesis during revision arthroplasty of cemented hip implants. Bone cement particles vere generated in the laboratory using ASTM standards in preparing acrylic bone cement using the Hovmedica Simplex P. Both the samples vere prepared for vieving in the scanning electron microscope. There vere differences in size and shape betveen the clinically retrieved bone cement vear particles and the laboratory fabricated bone cement particles. The retrieved vear particles vere rounded, vith pitting and cracks on the surface and had sizes ranging from 5 microns to 200 microns. The fabricated particles vere alvays angular vith jagged edges and ranged in size from 11 microns to 180 microns. Size, shape and surface characteristics of vear particles determine the biologic response and is critical vhen comparing in vitro versus in vivo reactions of fabricated particles.
