Abstract

Serious complications (except valvular injuries) which have to be treated operatively as an emergency rarely occur during balloon valvuloplasty (BVP). For this reason a surgical stand-by during the procedure is not mandatory as a routine. That is why the surgeon’s involvement in BVP is not identical with that in coronary angioplasty. Consequently, the discussion about surgical aspects of BVP can be directed only to the question which part in fact this new interventional technique may play in the treatment of valvular stenoses in general in the present state from a surgeon’s point of view. It is, however, extremely difficult to answer this question, because for any comparison with surgical results so far only short-term experiences with BVP are available. Moreover, as both techniques are applied to various entities of patients not only with regard to the topographical location of the valve but also to their pathomorphology one cannot deal with this issue as a whole.
