Study of Anodic Oxides by UV-Visible Potential-Modulated Reflectance Spectroscopy

  • Chapter
Spectroscopic and Diffraction Techniques in Interfacial Electrochemistry

Part of the book series: NATO ASI Series ((ASIC,volume 320))

Abstract

Details are given about the experimental measurement of UV-Visible Potential-Modulated Reflectance (PMR) spectra. Two different possible origins of a PMR signal are discussed, viz. physical and redox. It is postulated that the PMR transitions observed with most anodic films correspond to the absorption edge of oxides present in the film. Results are presented for the anodic oxides on Fe, Ni and Co, and it is shown how in favourable cases the anodic oxides can be identified in situ by PMR spectroscopy. Finally, interference effects in the thick electrochromic oxide film on Ir are presented and analysed.
