Study of Radical Cations by Time-Resolved Magnetic Resonance

  • Chapter
Radical Ionic Systems

Part of the book series: Topics in Molecular Organization and Engineering ((MOOE,volume 6))

Abstract

This review focuses on the study of hydrocarbon radical cations by time-resolved magnetic resonance methods. These studies attempt to elucidate the early chemical events induced by ionizing or photoionizing radiation. The development of specialized time-resolved magnetic resonance tools has allowed us to dispense with a key element that has been vital to a wide range of radical cation studies using static EPR, i.e., a stabilizing (rigid, chemically inert, electron capturing) matrix (e.g., frozen halocarbons, inert gases). The time-resolution and sensitivity achieved with the methods described in this chapter allow observations of very reactive radical cations in essentially neat systems (pure hydrocarbons) and in fluids up to room temperature. These methods open the way for the study of chemical intermediates such as hexamethyl(Dewar benzene)+ where implications and insights provided by theory are in need of further experimental data on radical cation structure and behavior under conditions less influenced by solvent/matrix interactions.
