Abstract
The adsorption of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and 1-butanol on solid aluminium oxide has been studied at 298.15 K by the batch method. It appears that butanol does not adsorb on its own, but when SDS is present, it will. Though SDS adsorption is preferred, one can adsorb more butanol by increasing its bulk concentration. By comparing the adsorbed layer of SDS and butanol with a lamellar lyotropic liquid crystalline phase, a D-phase, one can estimate the areas occupied by each component on the solid surface. These appear to be somewhat larger than in a D-phase. Adsorption of SDS in Winsor III systems has also been studied. It appears that the adsorption is highest from the middle phase and lowest from the upper phase microemulsion.
