Growth Factor Expression in Breast Tissue

  • Chapter

Part of the book series: Developments in Oncology ((DION,volume 62))

Abstract

Normal breast growth and differentiation are controlled by a complex system involving oestrogens and a group of locally acting growth factors. The latter are small polypeptides produced by all cells which stimulate cell proliferation by binding to specific cell membrane receptors. They are extremely active biologically, and concentrations as low as 10−12 g may have a proliferative effect.
