Abstract

Why should a meeting about the benefits and opportunities of “Effective Industrial Membrane Processes” present a brief paper on “Ultrafiltration in Living Capillaries” ? The selective processes of the natural membranes may encompass passive and facilitated diffusion as well as active transport, and they may function consistently over many years. They may also be self-repairing. Nevertheless it would strain credibility to propose that there was any immediate comparison which could be drawn on these grounds with the synthetic membranes which are the subject of this conference.
