Abstract

Discussion is included of the following topics: application potential of ceramics; past and future development of ceramics; criteria for use and selection of materials; estimation of future developments in material applications; and examples from research and development. It is concluded that difficulties in assuring high levels of quality and reliability, and high costs, will act as severe obstacles to the large scale use of ceramics in automotive engineering. Market penetration will thus be gradual and long term.
